Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Es gilt als ziemlich sicher, dass Samsung auf seinem am 20. Juni in London stattfindenden Premiere 2013 Event auch seine neue Smartphone-Serie Galaxy S4 Minivorstellen wird. Bereits Mitte Mai sorgten Bilder zum Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini für Schlagzeilen. Anfang dieser Woche packte Samsung versehentlich Abbildungen zu seinem Galaxy S4 Mini GT-I9195 auf die Website Samsung Apps.

Gestern sind dann angeblich unfrisierte technische Daten des AnTuTu Benchmarks aufgetaucht. Laut denen rechnet das Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini in der LTE-Variante GT-I9195 (Codename Serrano) mit einem Qualcomm Krait Snapdragon 400 Dual-Core-Prozessor (1,7 GHz) und Adreno 305 GPU. Gemäß den Benchmarkwerten verfügt das Galaxy S4 Mini über 1,5 GByte RAM und ein 4,3-Zoll-Display mit einer Bildauflösung von 960 x 540 Pixeln. Als Kameras sollen eine 8-MP-Hauptkamera und eine Frontkamera mit 2,1 MPixeln vorhanden sein.

Wie aus unterschiedlichen Quellen zu hören ist, wird Samsung das Galaxy S4 Mini in mehreren Modellvarianten auf den Markt bringen. So soll es neben dem Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini LTE GT-I9195 auch die UMTS-Variante als Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini GT-I9190, ein Dual-SIM-Modell als Galaxy S4 Mini Duos GT-I9192 und ein Smartphone-Modell für den chinesischen Markt als Galaxy S4 Mini GT-I9198 geben. Spätestens am 20. Juni wird Samsung das Geheimnis lüften.

Das Samsung Galaxy S4 mini LTE – Codename Serrano LTE – kommt mit einem Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Dual-Core Krait und 1,7 GHz pro Kern. Warum bisher von 1,6 GHz pro Kern die Rede ist kann ich nicht sagen, möglicherweise hat Samsung die Taktung leicht gedrosselt, aber sowohl die Systeminformationen als auch Qualcomms eigene Angaben sprechen für diese Taktung. Auf dem SoC kommt zudem eine Adreno 305 GPU zum Einsatz. Ansonsten wird das Samsung Galaxy S4 mini über 1,5 GB Arbeitsspeicher, eine 8 MP Kamera auf der Rückseite (3264×2448 Pixel) und eine Frontkamera mit 2,1 MP verfügen (1920×1080 Pixel). Das 4,3 Zoll große sAMOLED-Display mit 960×540 Pixeln war ja bereits früher zu sehen, Android 4.2.2 auch. Bleibt nur noch der 20. Juni abzuwarten und was uns Samsung dort noch alles zeigen wird.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is yet to get a price tag but the lower-res screen and less powerful chipset will certainly result in a meaningful discount. The Galaxy S4 mini will skip the top-of the-line Exynos 5 Octa and Snapdragon 600, settling for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1.7GHz dual Krait cores.

Samsung did well to keep the Super AMOLED screen and the resolution cut isn't too painful. qHD looks reasonably well on a 4.3" diagonal. The comfortably compact Galaxy S4 mini is the flagship in miniature, replicating the original design to the last detail, from the layout of controls, through the finish, to the location of the IR port. It is the same Android version ticking inside too, topped with TouchWiz 5.0 Nature UX. Even most of the air gestures of the big Galaxy S4 are available on the S4 mini too.

So, although the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini has been designed with budget in mind, it's mostly the hardware that was affected. The mini version of the Galaxy S4 is a feature-rich package, and users should have little to worry about if it behaves as promised. We'll get to what kind of performance you can expect but let's first get the design and build out of the way.

Above the display we have the earpiece, as well as a bunch of sensors. Other than the traditional ambient light and proximity sensors, there should be an IR gesture too to pick up the cool Air gestures in applications such as the web browser and music player. There's also a 0.9megapixel front-facing camera for video-calls.

On the right side there's only a power key. Considering the original Galaxy S4 hasn't got a dedicated camera key, we couldn't possibly expect to find one here.

The top of the Galaxy S4 features the 3.5mm audio jack, the secondary microphone and the IR blaster that allows you to use the smartphone as a remote control for your home appliances. There's also a feature-rich remote control app, so the functionality is available right out of the box.

The microUSB port resides alongside the primary microphone at the bottom and is used for both data connections and charging. USB host and MHL are supported.

Around the back, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini sports an 8MP camera, capable of recording 1080p video, and a LED flash below its lens. The loudspeaker grille is in the bottom left corner.

The package is powered by a 1900mAh battery. The microSD card slot and the microSIM compartment are located under the battery itself, so hot-swap is not an option.
